His Excellency Mr. Chandra Kumar Ghimire, the Ambassador of Nepal to the United Kingdom, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons, at the Palace of Westminster yesterday.

During the call on, quoting "British Parliament is the mother of all parliaments", as coined by Mr. John Bright, a British politician and reformer, the Ambassador first and foremost praised the historical role played by British parliaments. Likewise, he conveyed the message of Rt. Hon. Mr. Devraj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Nepal. The Ambassador also informed the Speaker about the inclusive nature of Nepal’s Parliament, the formation of a country specific Parliamentary Group of Nepal dedicated to the United Kingdom. Mr. Ghimire also commended the support received from the All-Party Parliamentary Group of the UK for Nepal.

While recalling the warm and cordial relationship that has been subsisting for over two centuries between the two countries, the Ambassador attached great importance to the role of high-level visits and exchanges between the two countries. He also emphasized the need for and importance of the UK government’s continued and increased assistance to help Nepal minimize the impacts of climate change, fulfill the country's aspiration for prosperity, and sustain and scale up the progress following its graduation from Least Development Country (LDC) status by 2026, among others. The ambassador also sought continued support from the UK government to address the outstanding Gurkha grievances at the earliest possible.

Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle acknowledged the historical and very special relationship between Nepal and the United Kingdom. The Speaker also talked affirmatively about the scope of collaboration between the Parliamentary Groups of both countries in the future. In addition, Speaker Hoyle also expressed his optimism that the support from the UK government for Nepal will be continued in the areas of needs and priorities of Nepal.
